Here is the first in a series of classic portraits I shot last week. I felt this project would best be served by shooting film rather than digital, Kodak Portra 160 in the 120 size to be exact. I used a Fuji GX 680III camera w/120mm lens. I first shot the talent and then created the chair and background in CG. Photoshop was used to composite the image. I love the dimension and nuance of color film…something that is sorely missing with digital. Since I own my own processor I was ready to scan in under an hour. I Used a Nikon Coolscan 9000ed to scan the 6x8cm negatives at 4000 DPI and Silverfast Ai 8 scanning software. Another nice thing about color neg. is it’s tremendous latitude. Highlight and shadow detail were rendered beautifully. Skin tone is rendered very naturally and grain is super fine with the Portra 160.
